The Agafay Desert: Marrakech's Stony Desert
The Agafay Desert is the stony desert closest to Marrakech, about 30 to 45 minutes from the city. This guide explains what the Agafay actually is, what people do there, when to go, and how it honestly compares with Zagora and the real dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga. None of the Morocco tour packages compared on this site stop in the Agafay, so it also points you to the desert tours that do reach proper sand dunes. For the full comparison of routes and prices, see Morocco tour packages.

Quick answer Agafay in brief
The Agafay Desert is a rocky desert plateau about 30 to 45 minutes from Marrakech, roughly 25 to 35 km southwest of the city. It is a reg, a stony landscape of hills and dry riverbeds, not a sand-dune desert. People go for camel rides, quads and views of the High Atlas. If you want real dunes up to 150 m high, you need Merzouga, about 534 to 560 km away.
Key takeaways
- The Agafay suits an afternoon or one night, while the Sahara at Merzouga needs 2 to 3 days. See the full Marrakech desert tour comparison.
- None of the tours on this site visit the Agafay. The cheapest way to real dunes is the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour from $129.
- Compare the camps and drives in the guide to Merzouga and luxury desert camp Merzouga.
- Check seasons and temperatures in the guide to the best time to visit Morocco.
What the Agafay Desert Is
The Agafay is the nearest thing to a desert that Marrakech has, and it is closer than most visitors expect.
A Stony Plateau, Not a Dune Sea
The Agafay Desert lies roughly 25 to 35 km southwest of Marrakech. Guides put the drive at anywhere from 30 to 45 minutes to 45 minutes to an hour, along the P2014 regional road. One French guide calls it about 40 minutes west of the city.
Geographically it is a reg, a rocky desert, rather than an erg, a sandy desert. The landscape is barren hills, rugged plateaus and vast stony plains, cut by dry riverbeds, with small pockets of sandy dunes and undulating hills. In spring it blooms with wildflowers. There are no dunes here comparable to the Sahara, where sand mountains reach over 150 m. On clear days the horizon shows the Atlas mountains, more or less snow-covered, and Toubkal at 4,167 m is the highest peak in that range.
Beside the desert sits the Lalla Takerkoust lake, held back by a dam built from 1929 to 1935 about 35 km southwest of Marrakech. The reservoir has a normal volume of 53.29 million cubic metres, though it was reported at a fill rate of 26.66 percent in early 2024. The lake offers swimming, jet skiing and pedal boating against the desert backdrop.
What People Do There
The standard Agafay outing is short. One travel writer found an all-inclusive 7-hour Agafay trip at about 20 pounds, which shows how brief the usual visit is. Most people come for an afternoon and evening or a single night.
The main activities are camel rides, quad biking, buggy driving, sunset over the High Atlas, stargazing and visits to Berber villages. Organised quad tours usually last about 1 hour, with two riders per quad taking turns to drive, and camels walk in single file at about 4 km/h. If you dislike big groups of 20 to 30 people, the village of Lalla Takerkoust has quad rental agencies for small groups.
Dozens of glamping camps dot the area, from basic tents to canvas suites with air conditioning, king-size beds and private plunge pools. Most camps have swimming pools. Plan on half a day to one night at the Agafay, against 2 to 3 nights for the Sahara.
Be honest with yourself about what this is. The Agafay gives you desert silence, stars and space within an hour of a hotel swimming pool. It does not give you rolling sand dunes. If the postcard image in your head is a sea of sand, read the Merzouga guide first. More detail on every route out of the city is in the Marrakech desert tour guide.

Agafay, Zagora or Merzouga
Three very different deserts sit within reach of Marrakech, and the drive times alone decide most choices.
The Honest Comparison
The table below compares the three desert destinations most often named by Marrakech travelers. Drive times and distances come from Rome2Rio, KimKim and a desert-distance guide, and the landscape descriptions come from travel guides covering each area.
A common claim calls the Agafay 'the desert of Marrakech', but the label hides a real difference. Zagora, about 350 km and roughly 6 to 7 hours away, has smaller dunes than Merzouga and suits a 2-day trip. Merzouga sits beside the Erg Chebbi dune field, about 28 km long and 5 to 7 km wide, with dunes rising about 150 m above the plain. The drive is 534.1 km and about 9 h 27 min by road per Rome2Rio, against 560 km and 10 to 13 hours per KimKim and 8 to 10 hours per a desert-distance guide, so the journey is often split across several days.
| Desert | From Marrakech | Landscape | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Agafay | 30 to 45 minutes, about 25 to 35 km | Rocky reg, stony hills, no real dunes | Half a day to one night |
| Zagora | 350.3 km, about 5 h 58 min to 7 hours | Smaller dunes than Merzouga, Draa valley oases | A 2-day trip |
| Merzouga (Erg Chebbi) | 534.1 km, 9 h 27 min per Rome2Rio, 560 km and 10 to 13 hours per KimKim | Sand dunes up to 150 m, about 28 km by 5 to 7 km | At least 2 to 3 days |
Who Should Skip the Agafay
Skip the Agafay if your reason for coming to Morocco is the Sahara itself. The Agafay has no comparable dunes, and no amount of camp lighting changes that. Erg Chebbi near Merzouga is what most people picture, a dune field stretching toward the Algerian border with a top dune of about 150 m, camel rides leaving one to two hours before sunset and camps at the edges of the sand.
The cheapest way to reach those dunes is the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour from $129 per person, the lowest of three options, with camel rides at sunset and sunrise (or a 4x4 transfer) and a night at a Berber camp in Erg Chebbi. The 4-Day Luxury Sahara Tour from Marrakech is a shared tour from $182 per person, the lower of two options, a luxury tent with private bathroom or a standard camp with shared bathroom facilities, and groups can reach 60. For a route that continues north instead of looping back, the 4-Day Luxury Desert Tour to Fes starts at $341 per person (the lowest option) and stops at Merzouga before ending in Fes.
For longer trips that fold the dunes into the classic loop of imperial cities, browse the full comparison of Morocco tours and the night in the sand in the guide to the Sahara camp night. Unlicensed camps in the dunes were closed in 2019 over environmental concerns, and camps now sit at the edges of Erg Chebbi, some a 4x4 or camel ride away from the road.

When to Go and What to Bring
The Agafay is a year-round destination, but summer heat and cold nights shape the plan.
Seasons and Temperatures
Guides call the Agafay a year-round destination, with spring from March to May and autumn from September to November the most comfortable seasons. October to April brings mild temperatures, while June to August is extremely hot. A French guide reports summer temperatures in the Agafay that can reach 50 degrees, so midday activity in summer is best avoided.
For reference, Marrakech itself averages 12.5 C in January and 29 C in July and August, with summer highs near 38 C and record extremes of 49.6 C in July and -3.6 C in January. Inland Saharan summer maximums in Morocco exceed 44 C. April to May and September to November are the best times named for the Moroccan Sahara generally.
The detail that surprises most visitors is the night. Agafay nights get cold even in summer, so a jacket or sweater is needed whatever the season. The same pattern holds at Merzouga, where winter nights in the dunes drop below freezing. The chergui, the Moroccan sirocco wind, can reach 100 km/h and peaks in March and November.
What to Bring
Pack for two climates in one day. Days call for sun protection, water and closed shoes for the stony ground, and evenings need a warm layer. If you book a camp with a pool, swimwear earns its place in the bag. Because the standard Agafay visit lasts only hours, confirm what your booking covers before you go rather than assuming.
For any desert trip in Morocco, the same logic applies at larger scale. The guide to the best time to visit Morocco sets out the month-by-month picture, and the seasons section of Morocco tour packages explains how the timing changes for a full loop of the country.

Is the Agafay a real desert?
Yes. It is a reg, a rocky desert of stony plains and barren hills, rather than an erg of sand dunes. Guides describe undulating hills, dry riverbeds and only small pockets of sandy dunes. If dunes are what you want, the Merzouga guide covers the real sand sea.
Is the Agafay the same as the Sahara Desert?
No. The Sahara's Moroccan dune fields, such as Erg Chebbi with dunes up to 150 m, lie 534 to 560 km from Marrakech and take 8 to 13 hours of driving. The Agafay is a stony plateau 30 to 45 minutes from the city with no comparable dunes. The routes out are compared in the Marrakech desert tour guide.
How far is the Agafay Desert from Marrakech?
Guides put it about 25 to 35 km southwest of the city, a drive of 30 to 45 minutes up to an hour along the P2014 regional road. One French guide calls it about 40 minutes away. That closeness is the whole appeal, and the same short-hop logic explains why a Morocco tour package heading for real dunes needs at least 3 days.
How much does a day trip to the Agafay Desert cost?
One travel writer found an all-inclusive 7-hour Agafay trip at about 20 pounds, which shows how short and cheap the standard outing is. By contrast, the 4-Day Luxury Sahara Tour from Marrakech to real dunes starts at $182 per person.
Are there snakes in the Agafay Desert?
This guide has no reliable information on snakes in the Agafay, so it gives no answer. For documented desert wildlife near Merzouga, including desert foxes, gerbils and Egyptian nightjars, see the Merzouga guide.
Can I visit the Agafay instead of Merzouga on a tour package?
No. None of the tours compared on this site include the Agafay. The desert tours go to the Erg Chebbi dunes at Merzouga instead, starting with the 3-Day Merzouga Sahara Desert Tour from $129. You would arrange an Agafay visit separately in Marrakech, and the packages that loop the dunes are listed under the grand tours section.
